How to Play Alchemist

Alchemist is a two-player game where players take turns placing pieces on a board, attempting to capture their opponent's pieces by surrounding them with their own. The winner is the player who captures all of their opponent's pieces, or who has the most pieces remaining when the board is filled.

The gameboard consists of a square playing area with 8 rows and 8 columns. In the center of the playing area is a large square called the " fountain ". The 16 spaces around the fountain are considered " neutral " and may be occupied by either player.

Each player has a set of 10 pieces, which consists of 1 king, 1 queen, 2 rooks, 2 bishops, 2 knights, and 4 pawns.Placing Pieces:

One player starts by placing one piece on any space in the playing area. Then the other player places one piece on any space. Play then continues with each player placing one piece at a time on any empty space. There is no turn order; players can place their pieces in any order they like.

Capturing Pieces:

If a piece is surrounded on two sides by pieces belonging to the other player, it is captured and removed from the board. If a piece is surrounded on three sides by pieces belonging to the other player, it is captured and removed from the board as well as turned over to display its color (red or black). A piece cannot capture an opponent's piece if it is already surrounded on two sides by that opponent's pieces.

Once all of a player's pieces have been placed, that player cannot make any more moves.

Board Filling:

When both players have no more pieces to place, play continues until either one player captures all of their opponent's pieces (and thus wins), or until both players have only pawns remaining on the board (in which case the game is a draw). If at any time there are no more possible moves for a player (all spaces are occupied by either opponent's pieces or pawns), that player loses the game.
